Video Kitt God Squad Kitt Robert GriffinQ Spirit founder Kittredge Cherry’s unique queer Christian ministry is analyzed by the experts of the Queer God Squad in a new video from Sunshine Cathedral, known as the world’s leading progressive queer church.

“She’s been that person who always reminds us that you can find the queer Christ in just about anything you look at,” said Robert Griffin, executive minister at Sunshine Cathedral.

He joined the three other Sunshine Cathedral clergy on the Queer God Squad to reflect on Cherry’s contributions in the 14-minute video titled “Lesbian Author Kittredge Cherry Champions Queer Faith and Art.” It was released on July 25 by Sunshine Cathedral Metropolitan Community Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“She’s an advocate and a teacher, but she doesn’t work at the courthouse or at a college,” said Durrell Watkins, senior minister at Sunshine Cathedral and author of his spiritual memoir, “Saved from Salvation.”

He marveled at how Cherry created a multi-faceted ministry at Q Spirit:

“She shows that there are many ways to serve. She was on staff in a parish and then she also had a position with the denominational office. But where she has become *Kittredge Cherry* is in this ministry where she has a newsletter and books and she promotes other people’s books and she does interviews. She has this calendar of saints and she writes liturgies and prayers, so she’s just a resource for queer Christianity and honestly one of the best ones I’ve ever come across…. No one else is doing what she is doing. I’ve seen a few people try, but this is HER calling, this is her anointing — clearly.”

Queer God Squad members who discuss Kittredge Cherry’s ministry on video are Durrell Watkins in front and (back from left) Kevin Tisdol, Anne Atwell and Robert Griffin.

Anne Atwell, minister of connection, noted on the Queer God Squad video, “She’s changing the world just by what she does.”

Watkins also expressed amazement that Cherry’s ideas about queer spirituality stem from her faith in a traditionally transcendent God:

“She can find gender fluidity and queer sensibilities in everything… which is so amazing because it makes you think and it makes you feel and it makes you consider and so it’s so, so powerful. But when she talks about God, she seems to be talking about the God I heard about as a kid — not a mean God — this God LOVES some gay folk, She loves Her some gay folk — but it’s still GOD, in a place and with opinions, not a process theology God, but a theistic God. And that’s just surprising. It’s great.”

The Queer God Squad voiced appreciation for the way Q Spirit does more than just promote Cherry’s own work. “She has become one of those people that I go to because she not only speaks HER truth. She shares other people’s truths,” said Kevin Tisdol, minister of education.
