Cross rainbow books 2023 logo
Check out the top 23 LGBTQ Christian books of 2023 — including theology, Bible, memoir, church life and history by diverse authors. The list was announced today by lesbian Christian author Kittredge Cherry at Qspirit.net.

“Inflation and book bans didn’t stop readers from buying LGBTQ Christian books in 2023. Picture books were red-hot this year,” Cherry said. “I’m proud to promote literacy and LGBTQ spirituality with this booklist.”

Four graphic novels — book-length works of sequential art telling a continuous story — are spread across various non-fiction categories on the list, including Bible, history and biography.

The whole world was queering, or so it seemed. The word “queering” came into its own as the first word in three different book titles: “Queering Christian Worship” came out this year, while “Queering Black Churches” and “Queering Contemplation” are set for 2024.

This year’s books ranged from user-friendly guides to serious academic studies and creative literary ventures. They come from a wide variety of authors of various races, ages and gender identities in the mainline Protestant, evangelical and Catholic traditions from North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

It didn’t take quite as many sales to earn a place on the Q Spirit bestseller list in 2023. Nationwide print and ebook sales were down in every category as books and literacy became less accessible, and the downturn affected Q Spirit along with everyone else,

LGBTQ Christian books can be hard to find

Readers praise Q Spirit’s annual list of the best LGBTQ Christian books as “my go-to guide for comprehensive listings of queer religious publishing” with “information you can find nowhere else!”

So many LGBTQ Christian books are being published that it can be hard to find them amid the flood of new books. Many have vague titles and non-existent marketing budgets, so they can get lost in the crowd.

“The Q Spirit list is here to help,” Cherry affirmed. “Q Spirit’s annual top-books list is more valuable than ever because it keeps getting harder to find them.”

In true nonbinary style, more LGBTQ Christian books continued the trend of overlapping traditional categories. For example, several books combine memoir with theology and/or Bible study. “I still believe that labels can help readers find what they want fast, so I made my best effort to organize the new crop of books into the familiar headings,” Cherry said.

Inflation continued to raise prices on everything, including books. Due to complaints from readers, all books costing more than $100 are forbidden from the 2023 list — a price-based book ban. A growing trend among academic publishers is to offer ebook versions at a reasonable price, even though the print price is astronomically off the charts. For purposes of this list, “Christian” is broadly defined and a few books are more post-Christian or generically spiritual.

Readers can click the titles or book cover images to go to the book on Amazon.

The 2023 list has something for everyone who cares about LGBTQ Christian lives. “These books will make great holiday gifts,” Cherry concluded. “Happy reading!”

6. “Rainbow Psalms in 30 Days” by Stephen Joseph Wolf (compiler).

Experience the psalms as rendered for LGBTQ+ readers in this daily devotional. While composed with LGBTQ+ people in mind, it is suitable for all people of God. The style is similar to inclusive-language translations of the Bible. Quotes from classic and contemporary spiritual writers (including gay 9/11 chaplain Mychal Judge) appear on the corners of pages. A few folk-art icons by Wolf himself grace the pages too. Poetry

book Vanishing Song

The Vanishing Song: Poems” by Jay Hulme.

A trans Christian poet follows the example of medieval saints to search for God in strange, wilderness places. Familiar and forgotten saints speak from forests, caves, crypts, ancient holy sites, abandoned shrines, and the tombs of old churches. Their revelations shed light on faith, sexuality and decay. In these borderlands, even the distinction between life and death gets blurred by resurrection. An emphasis on Celtic spirituality leads to what the poet describes as “a call to an older, stranger, form of faith; full of creeping greenery and roaring seas.” He is not only a performance poet, but also a speaker and queer theologian who preaches regularly at churches and cathedrals across the United Kingdom, and occasionally worldwide. His debut poetry book “Backwater Sermons” (with the hit poem “Jesus at a Gay Bar”) was a bestseller on Q Spirit’s 2021 list of the top LGBTQ Christian books. Published by‎ Canterbury Press, one of the UK’s leading Anglican publishers.
